restrooms and you part 2
Published on April 14, 2005 By C H Wood In Pure Technology

I couldn't pass this up.  In looking at past articles and thinking about our trip to China, I was brought back to the whole discussion about public restrooms.  China is yet another country that uses pit toilets.  Oh the joy.  After laughing I had to share.

Believe it or not there is a World Toilet Organization.  And although their website is meant to be serious, I found it pretty funny.

This is my favorite line though from the public notice "Do not choke the toilet bowl or the hand-washing basin. They are only used for their purposes and not the other reasons."  Ok. So who is taking out agressions on the poor toilet or sink?  What did they ever do to you?  It's not the toilets fault you had to much to drink.   Besides, they don't really breath so even if you strangled the crap out of them it would still be just a porcelain basin. And your never really going to get the crap back.

Here is another winner section from the website

"Social Expression

Public toilets often contain graffiti that espouses social issues, social frustrations and social trends in the society at large. It is a vent for such expressions to come forth. A private space that creates awareness of issues, not necessary for oneself but for others as well. However, this is an anti-social form of behaviour at the same time, as vandalism, the damage of public property is illegal in most countries.

Thus, the social expressions comes with a sense of rebelliousness that compels one to be a rebel with a cause, no doubt behind the security of a private toilet. Penal enforcement to stop such anti-social is difficult as toilet is a secure space with very little leeway for monitoring and catching the culprits. A more useful avenue of rectification would be through social mass education in which people are directed to healthier forms of social expressions - through arts, public debates, participation in public organizations or legal interest groups. "
So how many bloggers out there once wrote on bathroom walls.  Will graffitti rates go down in public restrooms as online blogging becomes more popular?

Anyways, if you need a good chuckle or just looking for that next conference date that you have to be at check it out.
