Here in Korea , they practice what I call “creative driving”     At first glance, much of the driving seems similar to the US .    But that changes quickly.     Let me talk about the legal differences first:   1)    U-turns are not only legal, but encouraged.     Especially in large 6 lane boulevards, it’s just fine to make a U-turn.     You’re supposed to do them in places ...

We are getting settled in and meeting lots of people both Koreans and foreigners.  We had a really nice day yesterday with a Russian friend and our new Canadian friend who is originally from Macedonia .  We went and checked out a fortress wall and had a nice lunch in the valley of the fortress.   Afterwards we checked out a temple with a 33 meter (108 feet) high gold coated Buddha.     You can find the pictures at the following link at the b...

New Page 1 Hey, this is Chris here, giving this blog thing a try.    I don’t plan on this being a long one, but who knows.    Anyway, we got back from Seoul today, where we were for 4 days.   Overall, I was impressed with the city.   Very large (something like 20+ million when you get to the surrounding areas involved) but it was manageable and not too crazy.   Of course, we went during the traditional summer slowdown, when I think most of the city gets a couple days off and heads...

Today I met with a Korean friend and a Japanese friend to be social and practice our language skills. Near the end of our time together the question was brought up by my Korean friend. Are shows like Cheaters and Jerry Springer representative of American Culture? I told her no of course and had to explain the reality of these shows is that they are on the edge shows that show an extreme side of American culture and that most Americans like most Koreans are hard working family oriented people w...

As many of you know, this year long relocation was done rather on a quick decision and move process so Chris and I did not have time to learn Korean before we came. As a result it poses an interesting problem when it comes to performing the day to day tasks such as grocery shopping. Oh how we take for granted our ability to read packages when we purchase and under appreciate the value of a picture. In this case a picture says a thousand words one of which is a grateful shopper. As any ...

On our car ride around the country side with our German and Russian friend we were asked to explain a few things American. As Americans we do not realize the amount of slang we use in the US. Our new Russian friend asked us to explain what honey and sweetheart meant when referring to another person. She knew that honey was a sweet substance from bees which is why she did not understand the use for people. Chris and I best explained it to her as something that like honey you greatly enjoye...

On Sunday of last week, one of the Germans at Kamco, and a Russian friend of his took us to a Buddhist temple that was located in the southwestern portion of the country. Temples in Korea are usually located in the mountains. (The reasoning for this is that at one time Buddhist were persecuted for there religion so they placed their temples high in the mountains so they could continue to practice.) As you arrive at the area of the temple there is a small gathering of restaurants. As you w...

Well the flight went well. The World class business pods were pretty cool to travel in with the lumbar messaging seats that fully recline into bed positions and the personal 14" screens that you can watch movies or play video games on. Not to mention the leg room that was pretty awesome. I had brought a water bottle since I thought I would be neglected like most other flights I had been on but I was wrong. It seems as though you can have pretty much whatever you want and are fed quite we...

Well, tommorrow I go off into the wild blue yonder. The flight leaves in the afternoon. I am all packed and ready to go. Chris will pick me up at the airport on Friday at 9:00 pm their time. Thankfully, we will be staying in a hotel that is located near the airport for the night. I am so looking forward to cuddling up next to my husband after a stressful week apart. Packing was an adventure this week. You know how you normally go through the process of packing and pulling out the no...
